German Development Service (Deutscher Entwicklungsdienst, DED)
The German Development Service is one of the leading European development partners for personnel cooperation and social development especially in the developing world. Founded in 1963, DED has employed over 15.000 development workers committed to improve the living conditions of people in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Currently, there are about 1.000 development workers working in 45 countries. DED's major goals are to fight poverty, promote self-determined, sustainable development and tp preserve natural resources. DED in Uganda
DED has been working in Uganda since the beginning of the 70ies in order to contribute to sustainable development and to achieve improved living conditions for the people. Civil Peace Service Programme (Ziviler Friedensdienst, ZFD)
The Civil Peace Service is a voluntary service, supported by women and men with professional and life experience, which is organised under the Development Workers Act. ZFD volunteers, acting in response to a request from local partners, help in overcoming enmity and developing peace-promoting structures through the intermediary and support services they provide. These services are available through the temporary placement of qualified experts in local partner organisations or through training that is provided for multipliers in the regions concerned. DED ZFD in Uganda
Since August 2000, DED's Civil Peace Service Programme has deployed peace advisors, promoted local peace initiatives and supported institutions in Uganda to find non-violent ways of resolving conflicts. The service concentrates on peace education and the promotion of trust between conflicting parties.

Projects and Team
The Civil Peace Service is currently active with five peace advisors and one junior expert in the regions of West Nile, Northern Uganda, Teso-Karamoja and Kampala. The national coordinator supports the projects from the DED country office in Kampala. The CPS Programme will be extended in the two current operational areas, West Nile and Teso-Karamoja regions. By the end of 2009 eight development workers will be working in the field of civil peace. The program’s future focus will be on reconciliation at community level, peace training programmes and regional peaceful development.

Working for Peace
To date, more than € 2.000.000 have been invested in projects and infrastructure. The projects are supported by experienced Civil Peace Service advisors who live and work in the respective regions.
